Hello. My name is Melissa McLean and I am currently working on my thesis project for an MFA in Web Design New Media at the Academy of Art University.
Next semester is approaching and I am looking for an interaction design professional who is passionate about their career and is interested in sharing their knowledge and fostering a young professional in the development of their thesis project.
Specifically, my thesis project is an application for the iPad that allows a user to compose music with very little knowledge of music theory or the ability to read or write music.
Fellow Designers, can we talk creative business career strategy?
Last week, a Bay Area ad agency hired me to "simplify the UI" of a project under the title Senior Interactive Designer. I expected two to three weeks of freelance work, but I didn't see day three. My conundrum concerns leadership.
I get the job and join a team that doesn't trust each other.
IxDA Toronto is planning another Speed Mentoring event for September 20th, after a very successful night last year. If you're interested in taking part, please contact @jeffkraemer on Twitter or email jeff.kraemer at Gmail.
Had a great time at the mentor speed dating event last night! Thanks to Angel, Artisan Creative, Art Institute, and all others who helped put it together. Wonderful to meet all the mentees (though I admit that I'm relieved that not EVERYONE on the mentee list showed up -- it was exhausting enough to talk to the 18 or so who were there).
How many people in our community are still looking for a mentor? And what about potential mentors -- who is hankering for a mentee?
Our next Speed Mentorship night is still a ways off, but I'd like to gauge the community's current need. Raise your hand if you're looking! Perhaps there are things we can do to help people get hooked up now, rather than waiting until August.
I'd also love to hear from last year's Speed Mentorship attendees... are you still in touch with your mentor / mentee? If not, why not?
Have you been a mentor to someone in the interaction design field?
Have you been mentored by someone? The IxDA LA is developing a local
mentorship program and we are looking for people to share their
experiences. What works, what doesn't? What have you gotten from
being a mentor or mentee? What could be better? How did you get
If you have not been a mentor or mentee, but perhaps have wanted a
mentorship relationship, what would you want from a mentor or mentee?
What do you have to offer?
Your thoughts and experiences are greatly appreciated!
I want to invite you to contribute your efforts to our Mentorship
program. We've had some great feedback from existing mentor/mentee
pairs, and many have found it an effective way of learning, sharing
knowledge, and getting to know others involved in the same type of
work. The program is purposefully vague, as each mentor/mentee pair
is different; we'll do our best to find a match for you, and then
you work together to establish a meeting schedule and program that
makes sense for you.
Just a quick update on the IxDA Mentorship program. Since we launched
the program on June 13th, 37 people have volunteered to be Mentors,
127 people have requested a Mentor, and weve matched 37 total pairs.
Recently, we asked for feedback on the program, and here are some
My mentor is great.
I got clarity as to how the job market in my field has changed in the
past 5 years.
I got coaching as to what to apply for now, and how to position
myself for my next specialty area.
I ordered the book she recommended, and have started reading it.
The IxDA Mentorship volunteer group is ready to formally kickoff the
first phase of the mentorship program. This phase is technically and
logistically simple; volunteers act as "match makers" to pair
potential mentors with those seeking some professional assistance.
This is a fluid, amorphous initiative; there is no set program, or
set of activities for people to do. Instead, we hope to encourage
digital relationship building that can extend into the real world as
