Web applications, Web sites - Boundaries

Hi all,

Yesterday, I had an interview for a position at a major online selling company. While discussing my work and my vision of usability and design, few questions came and I thought it could be a good point to share some of them and to have your inputs about these thoughts.

1. How are you making the difference between a web app and a website?

2. Do you consider Google as a web app or a website?

Feel free to answer or to give your thoughts about theses questions as I am looking to have different points of view.

What tool to use for converting websites to mobile

At the IxDA Vancouver '09 conference, someone gave a demo of an application they were building that can be used to convert and prepare a website for use/view on a mobile phone—can someone give any info about this group, links? Also, if you know of any open source tools out there that can achieve the same goal, please share. Thanks

How to display relevant home page as per the user type for first time users?

Type of Website: Portal

Target Audience: Companies that need art (artworks like vector art) and order sampling done. These companies are Promotional Suppliers and Distributors. There are first time users (lot of them) and existing client base.

The entire process is set online for receiving art till the point we invoice it.

Objective: Intuitively show personalized home page depending on the type of first time user (here -> Supplier or Distributor).

A few issues, but we're under way

Hi Everybody,

Just a quick note to say that we're excited to launch the new site, but there appear to be a few issues related to email.  We're working on them and will have things fixed up as soon as possible.

If you requested a password and haven't received the email yet please be patient, we're looking into it.

Stay tuned for more updates as we work through these last few things.

Thanks for all your support!

Shop or Buy?

What is the appropriate button to use on the product detail page when
the website navigation asks the user to either Shop or Buy?

Of course, can we get a little more interesting and personal? For
example: instead of Shop or Buy can we use buttons that say - 'Go
and Pamper' (for a gifts e-commerce website) or 'Educate Yourself'
(while buying education books) or 'Push Limits' (while e-shopping
for BASE jumping equipment).

IxDA website project: it\'s a go!

Dear IxDA community & those who care about us,

Firstly, THANK YOU again to all the IxDA supporters from around the
globe who contributed financially during our recent fundraising
drive. IxDA garnered $15,813, over half-way towards our ambitious
goal of $30,000 to support the IxDA.org website redesign project
(code-named Conan).

Some folks have been wondering if the Conan project will be able to
continue despite not reaching our fundraising goal. I'm happy to
announce that the project is very much a GO! The fundraiser was not
the determining factor for this project.

Come design itsme with us - New project website 2.0

Hi ,
I introduced itsme project to Ixda community in Feburary and received
some interesting comments related to the project.

For the new members, itsme is a new kind of personal computer based
on stories and venues. We are in the middle of the development phase
and you can see some on-going design activity on the new website.

In the past, I also received feedback related to the project website
- that people would like a more interactive way to discuss, evaluate,
ask questions, and keep a track of itsme development process.

IxDA, User Experience and Usability Websites

I am currently researching on a website with immense data and this
company being a corporate needs some good user interface that will
showcase this data, get more hits, have interactive elements, etc.
This software company has a 18 year history.

Can the IxDA community help me with a few things on IxD, UX and
Usability.
(1) Websites that help me understand all the three things mentioned
above.
(2) Website examples with good user experience.
(3) Website examples with bad user experience.
