History of Interaction Design training?

Hi folks,
I'm a sometimes member of this list so apologies for busting in
without having contributed for some time.

I'm writing an article for Interactions magazine and I would really
like to know how people are typically trained for interaction

I know the IxDA personas were based on a survey, though I haven't
seen the data, so don't know if they would answer my question.

Does anyone have any papers or surveys or data that might help me
answer this question?

Coroflot 2009 Designer Salary Survey closes Thursday night

A quick announcement and reminder that the 9th Annual Coroflot
Designer Salary Survey is currently open, but will be closing down at
midnight EST on Thursday, October 29.

Although there are a number of surveys that include IxD salaries,
Coroflot's is unique in the breadth of other design disciplines it
encompasses, offering a rare chance to view IxD in the context of the
creative professions overall.

The presence of the IxD field on the Survey, and on Coroflot as a
whole, has been growing dramatically over the past few years, so
we're eager to get as many responses as possible.

Survey: Design Process/Feedback Testing

I'm working on web interaction testing project and I was hoping to
enlist the help of IxDA members. Help a brother out by taking a few
minutes to fill out this 9 question survey, via the link below, on
your typical design process. Next week I'll share the results on
this discussion thread. Thank you all in advance!

Thanks again,

Usability Lab Survey :2009

Hi All,
I am looking at a survey similar to the one posted on

That is from 1994. Am looking for something very recent.
If at all you can help me with some information on the usability labs
housed in your companies, it would be a great help!

Using a Survey to Asses Usability

The company I'm working for is redesigning their account control
panel. We'll be releasing the functionality in stages and running it
as a beta alongside the existing control panel.

I've been set a task to write a series of questions that users will be
given the option to answer after using the new control panel to asses
"usability, accessibility & design".

Google Docs live forms - getting user feedback online

I just noticed Google Docs has a new feature in the Sharing section of a
spreadsheet, called "Invite people to fill out a form".
It seems to me like a pretty neat way to get online feedback/info from your
users. Of course, it has all the limitations a feedback form has as far as
quality and quantity of information, but I'm thinking it could be useful
when forms is what you need anyway.
For example, I was just in the middle of editing some feedback forms as word
docs (e-mailing is the best shot I have to get any feedback in this

A List Apart web design survey results

Not sure if people have noticed this survey from A List Apart that
was published yesterday. It's an annual survey on skills, titles,
geography, salary, hours, etc. in web design.

I'm curious as to people's thoughts of the results.

A resarch survey on free/open source software (F/OSS) usability

Dear usability experts and F/OSS developers,

If you are working in an open source project, we are inviting you to
participate in a doctorate study that investigates how developers and
HCI experts work in a distributed manner. You will be asked to answer
a set of questions regarding F/OSS projects you take part in.

Do you use UI patterns?

I'm conducting a survey on how people use UI patterns. Specifically, I'm
curious about whether people use the patterns in "Designing Interfaces" in
the ways that I thought they'd be used. Are they used as design advice?
Brainstorming tools? A lingua franca? Design instruction?
