The Evolution of User Research and Usability Testing: A Forty-Year Perspective with Tom Tullis

26 August 2014
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Fidelity Investments

Jersey City, NJ 07310

Forty years ago, there was no web, no Internet, no Facebook or Twitter, no PC or Mac, no Microsoft or Apple, and no Google. But there were usability labs. From its beginnings, the primary purpose of usability testing has been to uncover problems that users have in using some product or system. Classic usability testing in a lab with a relatively small number of representative users served that purpose reasonably well for many years. But the world is changing and usability testing needs to change with it.

In this presentation, Tom Tullis of Fidelity Investments will take us through an amazing journey through the brief, yet rich history of usability research; from the origins of the human factors field in World War II to some of the commercial tools and techniques for conducting different flavors of online user research will be introduced. A framework for thinking about these tools as well as other more traditional tools will be presented.

Tom Tullis is Vice President of User Experience Research at Fidelity Investments. He joined Fidelity in 1993 and was instrumental in the development of the company’s user research team and state-of-the-art Usability Labs. Prior to Fidelity, he held positions at Canon Information Systems, McDonnell Douglas, Unisys Corporation, and Bell Laboratories. He is coauthor of the books Measuring the User Experience: Collecting, Analyzing, and Presenting Usability Metrics and Beyond the Usability Lab: Conducting Large-scale User Experience Studies. In addition, he has published over 40 articles in a wide variety of publications. Tom is also an Adjunct Professor in the Human Factors in Information Design program at Bentley University and he holds eight United States patents.

In 2011, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the User Experience Professionals Association and in 2013 he was inducted into the CHI (Computer-Human Interaction) Academy.
