Where to find articles (scientific or practical) about Notification system UI design

Hi all, I have been lurking on the mail list for a while now, and now I have a question about notification system design.

It seems to me that finding good documentation about the design of notification system UI design is hard. System level articles are easy to find, but the UI seems to get no love. Any pointers? I am looking for documents on everything from small mobile devices to tablets to full desktop systems.

The HIGs from each OS manufacturers do have some interesting stuff, but largely suggest using their notification UI for most tasks, I need a little more.

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks for the Share.

This is an excellent article from your list about Attention Management. Looks like they are looking for ways to make interaction stick between a human and a computer (i.e. Internet)

Andrews P. (2004) Vying for your attention: Interruption management, Executive Technology Report, 7, 1-8 [PDF 52KB]

This is something that we covered in pyschology in my junior year. A very interesting subject, and although this subject is simple. It does need a few different approaches because attention is ALWAYS changing.
