Hi there,

So, I'm early in my UX Design career...currently I work for a large company, doing web strategy for our internal support site (intranet). This involves basic user experience stuff to make sure the pages we put up give a great experience for employees, so they can find the info they're looking for, or find/discover the company benefit/service we want them to know about/take advantage of. I do a fair amount of wireframing, site map creation (for IA), usability testing (and acceptance testing), and eventually design mockups and building out (at this point we usually get a resource to handle the graphics and coding).

Anyways, a real good friend of mine who is an engineer, currently working with a few ex-googlers, are developing a pretty simple iPad game. He was hoping I could help out, mostly because he likes working with friends and wants to give me the opportunity for experience. I think it should be great, except for the fact that I have never worked on a mobile app...feeling a bit over my head, but I want to take it on.

I was wondering if anyone knew:

1. What a good hourly rate is to give them (I have calculated out roughly 35 hours for wireframes, user testing, task glow, and revisions based on user testing).

2. Good resources for learning UX for ipad/mobile apps in general? I'm particularly interested in seeing wireframe examples for mobile apps and games.

I appreciate the help, I posted a week or so ago for the first time and got some great feedback. Great community!

I know this isn't part of the question, but 35 hours seems awfully low for all that work. Have you considered the time for recruiting and screening participants and analyzing the feedback?

As for the rate, it really depends on the quality you can provide. I've known many designers and researchers, including myself, that get between $75-125 per hour. For your first consulting project, you can use the rule of thumb to estimate your hourly rate based on your salary and double it. After tax time, you'll take home a lot less than you expect from consulting work.

A start at learning UX for mobile is to just get out there and use apps, play with different devices. Ask friends and family to try applications while you observe. With mobile in general, you want to edit your design work as much as possible. Only include features that really benefit the user and eliminate unnecessary distractions. Simple, clean design.

I highly recommend the human user interface guidelines that Apple has put together for the iPad (and all their products).

You can access that here: http://developer.apple.com/ipad/sdk/

That's a great place to start, if you haven't checked them out already.

Check out the book Tapworthy by Josh Clark. It's a good overview of good iOS design.

Hi Mike,

I totally agree with Samantha - Your calculation can't work or you just work on an one-page.project - even then it's very less.

Have you checked your calculation regarding each dieliverable that your client, your developers and the decision makers need and a standard project plan http://www.boxesandarrows.com/files/banda/uxdesign-planning-is/image_6_holger_maassen_schedule_of_UXD-P_1238x1030.gif (http://boxesandarrows.com/view/ux-design-planning) and or the project plan of your client?

By the way I will write a new article about calculation for freelancer in the next few week on my blog http://ux4dotcom.blogspot.com/ .
