Hello, all ye interacteeevs,What's the best way to scroll photos on the web and with mobile devices in mind, vertical (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/07/2010_world_cup_comes_to_a_clos....) OR Horizontal (http://www.life.com/gallery/55631#index/0)
I would say it depends on the screen aspect ratio.
If it was for a mobile device horizontal.
Web feels more natural vertically since we are used to this way of navigation.
The main criteria imho would be the interaction scheme you are using for the whole website.
Was there scrolling on the horizontal example? I only saw a bar below the photos that I could click on a pic in or chunk-shift the bar. Due to page layout, it wasn't very mobile (iPhone) friendly at all.
The portrait page-oriented web makes vertical scrolling familiar and easy, which isn't always "best". Simply flipping it on it's side is unlikely to be better, although for rotatable screens, it could allow image size maximization.
"Best" is going to be a compact solution like Cover Flow, something where the photos scroll in place rather than scrolling the entire page.
