Hi all,

I am currently employ in a retail company doing all the marketing collateral such as presentation, user interface, etc....  Am I still consider an UI designer?  I do all the concept to final stage on the site.  The reason I ask because I am trying to locate a job as an UI.  I want to know will all my pass experience consider UI experience?

How do you generate revenue to your company?

What are the 3 to 5 things you do in this position that are making or saving money to your current employer. Identify those and you'll have your answer. What you profession is an what is it that you do sometimes is just not related.

A rose by any other name can still prick you and make you bleed. Marketing collateral and presentations are typically the purvue of visual communication designers*. User Interface Design (visual) is often done by user interface designers or sometimes designer/developers - those gifted with visual communication skills applied to the digital interface problem space (I don't give a f*ck about tools, but typically one of the Adobe products like PS/FW/IA is used to create these deliverables), to instantiate concepts explored in form, layout, typography, colour theory. Working backwards, if your work involves the exploration and design for the actual behavior on digital screens (web/thick client/mobile/kiosk/touch) and through various communicative deliverables convey this manifest behavior conversation between users and devices, or users and users mediated through some interface, then you are talking more of the interaction design domain.

Is this helpful? Would you like to move further back in the process to include problem space definition, ideation, design research and synthesis or is this enough to help you out?

Cheers,

w.

* Visual Communication Design is a term I picked up from Katey Deeny, a UXA, student in HCI at UW, and former professor of architecture at SCAD. It was not one I was familiar with.

Thank you for all the info.  I think I can call myself an user interface designer since my main roll is to instantiate concepts explored form, layout, typography, colour theory all day long.
