Junior IxD Looking for Mentor?? Are you out there?

I've tried going through the system here to get a mentor but have found it to be unsuccessful, so I figured I'd try my luck with you all on the discussion board.

I read the board every once and a while and it seems as though there are great people here who could effectively serve as mentors so I would be so appreciative of your help and guidance - even if that meant an email once and a while.

I have a management consulting background and have been working on web projects for the past year.  I have a grounded knowledge of XHTML/CSS, Photoshop Design for mockups, and of course Site Architecture and Wireframes.  I very much want to land a junior level position somewhere to help advance my career with a team of IxDs that could help bring me up to their level, but the market has been tough for juniors lately.  One experienced designer told me that in good times I'd be hired no problem, but these are not necessarily good times.  I've also learned that my business background would be great in this field...but I realize it is going to take a while before companies really see that demand coming through for IxDs with business savvy vs. let's take a very technical person and teach them to be a business thinker.  Of course landing a job right now would be great, but the most important thing to me is continually looking for project opportunities to increase my expertise and seeking ways to improve myself as an IxD and a networker.

Granted I live in NYC so I figure there MUST be people on IXDA living in NYC that would be willing to meet with me for coffee to answer some of my questions, review my work quickly, and just give me general advice about improving my expertise and networking with other IxDs.  So if you would be interested, certainly shoot me an email.

Thanks everyone,

I recieved a mentor though the IxDA program but that person really didn' t have time to meet with me so I gave up trying to schedule anything.

I'd suggest going to IxDA, UX Book Club etc meeting in New York and get involved there. I met a number of people in Atlanta through IxDA and Book Club that way that I have been able to ask questions to and have helped me the last few years.

I am thinking about starting a national junior meetup group for young interaction designers. We can help each other learn the tools and interact (no - pun intended) with each other. I am looking for a few graduates, and current collegiate students to help me initiate this idea. If anyone is interested in helping me start this project and see it grow please email me or message me. I know most professionals are quite busy with their schedules, but if we develop a collegiate organization under ixDA it would help improve our industry!!

hi J

A meetup group for young interaction designers would be sweet. Im a student and I am always looking for new ways to network. I'm not sure how I could really help, but I like the idea.

I'm not sure that the mentorship program is currently operational. I tried to sign up to be a mentor here in Washington D.C. but was never matched up with a junior designer.

I'd echo the advice from Jamie above: get out to local IxDA events a few times and you'll meet some people happy to answer your questions. I know we all are here in D.C.

I had the same experience as John. Applied to be a mentor, sent several follow-up emails and Feedbacks, never heard a thing.

I am getting great responses from http://meetup.com to create the group. I would like to call it YixD ( Young Interaction Designers). I am currently looking to get sponsors and volunteers to help create and support the group. The group shall be mainly focused on younger designers interested, and studying interaction design. I think it would be great to have a community amongst the future moguls in this industry. I would love to set up a scholarship program for students who can't afford a computer or any technology. I am passionate about technology, mobile development, and video production for web and would like to hear other students opinions about this field. If anyone is interested in helping me please email me and I shall try and launch a live UStream broadcast or skype session to talk with everyone. But I am really excited to get YixD started, who knows could possibly land a supporting conference to ixDA's!! Thanks for the support guys and make sure you click the thumbs up to push this post higher on the discussion board!! Cool

As I read the post, I think JixD would be better then YixD, any feedback as an interaction designer you know critical user feedback is welcomed heavily haha!!

Another thought might be to see if IxDA would make you a "chapter" site for the junior ixd group. I'd be happy to help out in Atlanta we have a decent number of young people in UX. Plus we also have Georgia Tech with their HCI program.
