I just read an interesting article in Gizmag about a very creative traffic design solution.  Apparently, the road on the Pearl River between China and Hong Kong also divides folks who drive on the left and right side.  This unique bridge not only reverses the direction of the flow of traffic, but also puts the drivers in the cognitive mindset to switch sides:

Why do I have my doubts about the viability of a project called a Pearl (river) Necklace. Someone's making a joke somewhere in that story.

According to the original article, this was a concept that was not realized. Here's an animation of how the "traffic flipper" (as NL Architects calls it) works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwpqU3lRfMo

Yeah, according to the article, it was proably rejected because the flip was on the wrong side of the river - sounds political to me.  Nice vid!  I hope that wasn't the one they showed during the competitions.  It probably would have been more persuasive if they had shown it from the first person perspective.
