This Friday, 16th April, is the deadline to apply for one of the scholarships to attend the MEX Mobile User Experience Conference & Awards in London on 19th/20th May:

http://pmn.co.uk/mex/scholarship09m.shtml

The 7th international MEX Conference brings together 100 of the deepest thinkers in mobile user experience for 2 days of expert learning, new idea creation and networking.

The scholarships are part of the MEX tradition of reserving a certain number of supported places at each event for students, individual innovators and young start-ups who wouldn't otherwise have the budget to attend.

100 standard ticket places are also available to companies with event budgets (priced at GBP 1499).  You can find all the info about the MEX Conference at:

http://pmn.co.uk/mex/

Applications close at 23:00 London time on 16th April 2010.  We're very grateful for the Digital Communications Knowledge Transfer Network (DC-KTN) for supporting the MEX Scholarships this year.

Hi Marek,
Wish I could qualify for the scholarship but my company is too big and makes too much money.  Yet I am in the dept with almost no travel/conference budget.  So I will have to miss (again).  But I have been working on my submission to the MEX Design contest again (you might remember MoDist (a shortlister in 2008) and The Introducer last year).  Anyway, I have a couple contenders for what I want to submit and am hoping you can help me decide (I wont reveal either to you so as to not taint your judging ability--just general questions).
1) In the UK and Europe in general, do you have an income tax system like the States (people do their own taxes and submit to the government)?2) If so, what is your "tax day"?  Ours is 15 April every year. 3) Do you have tax accountants (professionals that will prepare your taxes for you if you pay them)?
Thanks,Phil

Sorry Phil, I missed your reply.  To answer your questions:

The tax system is different for each European country.

Specific to the UK and from my limited personal understanding:

1) Yes, there are tax accountants, generally used by companies and those who are self-employed.  Most employers handle tax on behalf of their employees through the PAYE (Pay as you earn) scheme.

2) The tax year starts on 6th Apri.  The deadline for filing a paper tax return is 31st October or 31st January if you do it online.

I'd recommend checking out www.hmrc.gov.uk to verify all this.

Good luck with your entry!
