Easy return to a portal after navigating off

Hi All,

I'm designing a portal-like page for a large corporation whereby a user can select facets to search on or just generally select the type of information they are looking for from simple navigation. Based on the users request, we'll aggregate all relevant links to content across the mother site and display them in modeless windows or entire pages belonging to the portal. My question is, does anyone know of an effective UI convention that would allow the user to get back to the portal for additional search refinement once they've clicked a link and navigated off to another part of the corporate site? Sites such as About.com used to use a persistent "hat" element at the very top of the page as a way back for instance.

Thanks much!

Bonnie
