Need a mentor? Want to mentor?
How many people in our community are still looking for a mentor? And what about potential mentors -- who is hankering for a mentee?
Our next Speed Mentorship night is still a ways off, but I'd like to gauge the community's current need. Raise your hand if you're looking! Perhaps there are things we can do to help people get hooked up now, rather than waiting until August.
I'd also love to hear from last year's Speed Mentorship attendees... are you still in touch with your mentor / mentee? If not, why not?

I'm still interested in pairing with a mentor if possible, so consider my hand raised. I have yet to put together any type of writeup that details what I'm looking for, so maybe this will motivate me. If there's any potential mentors out there, please feel free to get in touch (I'm nickheise most places online) and we'll see if it might be a good fit.
Cheers.
My career opportunities continue to be hampered by a lack of any formal experience and training in usability testing. I missed the boat on Brad Einarsen's mentoring group for this and am hoping somebody can share some wisdom about how to develop some testing chops in fairly short order.
So if there's a mentor willing to share some insights around this I'd love to meet them.
Ian, I'd be happy to share some usability testing experience (can't promise wisdom). Perhaps we can 'swap' some know how?
Hi Avi:
Would love to get together and see what we can share. I'll send you something directly.
My hand is raised too. I would love to connect with a mentor interested in working with someone with a diverse back ground (education in anthropology, art, and information design; currnetly working in online marketing/communications). I'm looking for general guidance as well as learning more about methods in interaction design, usability, and IA.
When is the next Speed Mentorship event scheduled? It sounds like a great idea.
How is it determined who is a mentor and who is a mentee? I have almost 10 years experience in web and software development, but can always learn from another's experience.
Hi Chris,
We're sort of thinking speed mentoring will be a yearly event -- meaning the next one would be July or August. That's why I'm trying to think of what we can do to facilitate pairings in the meantime.
For the event, you simply sign up either as a mentor or a mentee -- absolutely your choice, there are no rules about who takes which role. We love the idea of peer mentorship too.
If anyone has any ideas about how to help people connect, more than this thread, do share and we'll see if IxDA Toronto can assist. Some options are:

A design slam sounds like a blast.
My tag will read "Menteer".
I'm with Chris on this one. Teaming up a bunch of folks with different experience levels for a design slam would be a great experience for everybody, I think. It would also help people to possibly find "menteers" based on affinities discovered while working out the design challenge.

Okay, it's settled - there is a Design Slam event in the works! We'll probably aim for May, but we'll keep everyone updated.
Hi,
My name is Rhonda and I am new to IxDA. I am currently looking for a mentor and would be very interested in any program you might offer.

I'm not a designer but a product manager who believes deeply that design is critical to successful products. Can someone like me take part as a mentee? The design slam idea is a great one.
Thanks
Chris
Sorry this reply is so late Chris, but absolutely, anyone can become a mentee! We don't discriminate :)
Suggestion: build in time/method for debrief. The slams I've been involved in all ended with breathless presentations focused on the 'product', but no time or space to relfect on process, consider what worked or didn't, etc.
Thanks for the suggestion Avi. I think that would be valuable

Hello!
I'm very interested in participating in the "Mentoring" stream of thought and activity as both a mentor and a mentee. As a mentor, I can share my experiences as a remote employee, the challenges and opportunities available working as a UX practitioner within an enterprise corporation, and adapting UX methods to fit the scope and budget of projects. As a mentee, I'm looking for someone to help me better identify opportunities in career paths and building expertise in the business development side of design thinking. Please let me know when & how I can get involved!
