Hi,
Does anyone have good examples or ideas for the best way to link words to
definitions in a glossary while they are being used in the context of the
interface? Rather than just make the entire word a link, I would like to
have a symbol or something next to a word that's clickable.

There are a couple reasons why I don't want to make the word clickable: 1)
Some of the words will be column headings that are already clickable to sort
the column 2) I want to set the expectation that when the user clicks on the
symbol (or whatever) they know they will get a glossary definition and not
be taken to a new page like other links.

As always, your help is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Kyle

Despite our having spent 15 years conditioning users that "help" will
generally give them circular references and untrustworthy rewordings of
specs, I nonetheless I vote for abstracting the problem one level and
regarding glossary definitions as simply another case of "more info." So I'd
use whatever is your preference for a help icon, such as the lower-case "i"
in a circle...

or the question mark.

Had you not excluded linking the word, I'm a big fan of using a dashed
underline to cue the user to alternative link techniques. I first saw this
on 1&1.com (unfortunately only after logging in) where they also changed the
cursor to the help cursor:

styleexample{
cursor: help;
}

By the way, you forgot to preface your question with the secret password...
"Does anyone know of any studies...?"
