As discussed on this list some weeks back, tree views are difficult for users to understand. However, tree views are really common in enterprise software applications and developers love them. I have been consulting with software companies to show them problems with tree view navigation and helping them solve some of them. We are still fine tuning our approach to solve such problems, but here's a generic tree view removal surgery that has been working well with adamant development managers (and users too!).
