Designing for People by Henry Dreyfuss.

And relish at how it was pretty much all figured out about 50 years ago
(well, written about then... I'm sure he was practicing as such long
before then). Process, terminology, skills, etc. etc.

I've been (slowly) writing my thoughts on it on my site

I have the book on order actually, largely due to your blog entries. It
sounds like a great book. One that I missed somewhere along the line. I
look forward to reading it.

There are many things that have been figured out long ago in the same
vein. What Rand said about design in many of his books, what Tufte has
written about in his, Bringhurst, Tschichold, Albers... so much has
been written before. Much of it seems to be forgotten, lost or ignored
in the tech design community.

By the way... if you are going to tell us to shut up and read Dreyfuss
about design and process, can I say you should stop telling us what to
read and redesign your site to not use the dreaded, somewhat
horrendous, default MT template?

[Ducking. And yes, please add a "wink wink nudge nudge" there.]

For those of you interested in a little historical perspective, the opening
page of the Dryfuss book contains a quote that sums this all up nicely.

"We bear in mind that the object being worked on is going to be sat upon,
looked at, talked into, activated, operated, or in some other way used by
people, or in some other way used by people individually or en masse.

When the point of contact between the product and the people becomes a point
of friction, then the industrial designer has failed.

On the other hand if people are made safer, more comfortable, more eager to
purchase, or more efficient --- or just plain happier --- by contact with
the product, then the designer has succeeded." -- Henry Dryfuss

Please note the title is industrial designer and the fact that the
observation was made long before the internet of most software was even a
consideration.
