Organizational Placement of a Usability Group

I am currently wrestling with the issue of the best organizational fit
for a Usability Group.

Eric Schaffer devoted a section to this issue in his book
"Institutionalization of Usability". Realizing that the best model
can depend on the size of the organization, I would appreciate:

1) pointers to any other research on this subject

2) receiving feedback from people on this list as to whether they
have a centralized or distributed model for their company's usability
efforts

3) receiving feedback as to the positive (or negative) experiences for
each model (what works or doesn't work).

3) knowing how many of you work for organizations where the focus on
Usability efforts includes both client-facing design intiatives as
well as employee-facing initiatives. If so, is it a centralized vs a
de-centralized model?

Thanks in advance!

Helen,
I remember that there is something on that subject in Deborah J. Mayhew
<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Deborah%20J.%20Mayhew/104-8665280-8959126>'
book "*The Usability Engineering Lifecycle: A Practitioner's Handbook
for User Interface Design" (check the last section on "organizational
issues")

Back in 2001 I started a Yahoo!Group about this subject:

It has been a long while since there's been any activity, but the message
archive might prove useful in answering your questions...
