I'm seeking good examples of persistent language toggles/controls.
My application will actually support only English & Spanish but I'd
love any good examples.
rookie mistake: require someone to know what their language is called
in English (or whatever the primary display language is) to select it.

Hi Erin,
By language controls do you mean something like a drop-down box to
select the translation of the site?

Provided screenshot is meant for keyboard layout selection ("input
menu"), not for system language.
This is the screenshot for system language selection:
