I'm undertaking a research Ph.D via a combination of practical and
written dissertation. I'm doing this within the arts faculty of
Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. R.M.IT and Q.U.T in Australia
also offer these types of Ph.Ds within the area of interactive design.

Could someone please advise me of other universities offering similar
programmes? I'm keen to make contact with colleagues undertaking this
type of experience and share insights on what type of standards we
should be seeking when developing practical work in this context.

I can't seem to find mention of this in the ixda archives.

cheers and thanks!

Hi Natasha
Creativity and Cognition Studios at UTS also do practice-based

They also sometimes run seminars on practice-based research.

Goodluck with your work.

Dear Natasha,

As you may already know, there is an email list called PhD-Design set
up for people like you. Many design-researchers and PhD students are
on it; the archives are full of discussions on practice-based research
and dissertations. And related stuff.

You can find the list archives, subscription info etc at https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=phd-design

Best of luck,

Hi Natasha,

I'm presently enrolled in a Ph.D program at the Umeå Institute of
Design with a focus on Interaction Design. The program is meant to be
practice-based, with "real" design research projects in
collaboration with companies and/or external collaborators.

There is also a young initiative (started in December 2007) here in
Sweden called Center for Research in Design. It consists of a
nationwide group of students and supervisors who are undertaking Ph.D
studies in Design. We have discussed, explored and debated internally
many issues about what can be referred to "practical research or
practice-based Ph.D studies"

Some basic about the group. It is only in Swedish as of now:

with Google's Transalate it's not so bad:

We have regular meetings every second month. Feel free to contact me
or Karin Blombergsson, the group's secretary for further
