Definitions of Design

Hi All,

I'm working on categorizing design definitions and I'm looking for
design definitions.

Here are some examples what I'm trying to do (in much more detail:)

Category: Holistic Design; Example: Everything is design
Category: Superficial Design; Example: Design is the paint job on a
car.

What is your definition of design? what definitions of design do you
know? There are a lot of different thoughts about what design is
(probably almost as many as designers) and I'm trying to collect as
many definitions as possible.

These can be from all design disciplines - Industrial, Graphic,
Interaction, Service Design...
