Well this caught me by surprise.

I've been busy making flight and hotel arrangements to attend Interaction
'09; now that they're done, I logged on to purchase the conference ticket.

This was what I saw on the program schedule:
http://interaction09.crowdvine.com/calendar

...and I thought the entire program's events were open to all conference
attendees.

Little did I know that some of the workshops listed on the 5th and 6th of
Feb were pre-conference workshops that charged an additional fee. It was
only while I was purchasing the conference ticket was I made known of this.

The Program Schedule should clearly state:
1. Pre-conference portion of the schedule
2. Workshops available to attendees at an additional fee and how much

I'm still attending Interaction '09; I'm just disappointed I won't get to
attend the workshops by Ted Booth, Dan Saffer and William Bardel.

Tim..

Hi Timothy,

Sorry for the confusing messaging. It's definitely an issue as to
how we have communicated the flow of the conference, and as chair
I'll take the fall there. We have to charge extra for the workshops
because well the workshop leaders have to make their way for all
their hard work. It's a pretty common model for conferences. But we
have not done a good job communicating this. There are 3 free
workshops this year. 2 from Adobe and 1 local leaders summit.

Allot of things to learn for our young organization!

-Greg

Tim,

Workshops at conferences are typically an additional fee. Having both
taught workshops and attended them, I can tell you they take a lot of
work from the presenters, which is one reason they're not free with
the conference.

Every conference I've been to that offered pre-conference workshops
charged extra for them. It's pretty standard practice.

In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they are not.

So the disconnect is that the Crowdvine part of our site does not
state that the workshops have an associated cost to them. I'll
change that today. Sorry for the confusion there. The registration
page has clearly stated that the there is a fee for the workshops
from the start and most people have understood that. I will give a
status as to the workshops in a separate thread.

:) Greg

I was initially tripped up by this as well. I noticed it recently and
made a mental note to go back and make some decisions about attending
them.

Something else that's not clear though is the whether or not the
designation that you're interested in a session means you have a
reservation for that session.

Last year I remember the sessions being freeflowing. ie: you could
designate interest in a session and still change your mind at the last
minute and attend a different one in the time slot. (A good thing BTW).

But that gets a little blurry, particularly since you can express
interest in the pre conf workshops, which require payment and do
secure a reservation.

Maybe I missed something. I'll go back and look again.
