IxDA Education
2008

Dear IxDA community,

Do you want to make a difference with the next generation of Interaction
Designers? IxDA is about to start a number of interesting education-related
initiatives, including a mentoring program and round-up of IxD schools... We
need *your* help to define and execute these and future projects.

We're looking for educators, students and practicing designers to build a
team of volunteers focused on how IxDA can bring value to the experience of
IxD education around the world. If you're interested in how IxD is taught
and learned, or how practice and education can interface, we want to hear
from you!

To get involved, please contact:

education [at] ixda.org

Please include some information about yourself, and especially what issues
you're passionate about in the education & learning space. We'll include you
in our new working group, and look for your participation in
education-related initiatives.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,
Jeremy Yuille

Dear friends,

Please get involved! I'm excited for IxDA to help the next
generation of designers and connect current practitioners to students
and those interested in expanding their knowledge. This list
membership is the most amazing resource in IxD!

Best,
Liz, IxDA Vice-President

Itamar Medeiros

My name is Itamar Medeiros, from Brazil, currently living in Shanghai,
where I work as Product Design Manager of the Geospatial Business Unit
at Autodesk®, and help promote Interaction Design as a local
coordinator for the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

As an Information Design specialist, I served a two-year term as
member of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Society of
Information Design, lead the Design Research team of the Hypermedia
Lab at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, and held a lecturing
position as Assistant Program Director of the Visual Communication
Department at Raffles Design Institute, Shanghai.

Since 2001 I've been teaching on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
and Hypermedia in Design and Information Systems undergraduate
programs, as well in some graduate studies departments.

My roles at different design undergraduate departments included:
coordination of BA programmes (BA Hons Visual Communication & BA Hons
Design for Multimedia), both validated by Northumbria University
(Newcastle, UK); writing/adapting/adjusting the curriculum (module
descriptions, lesson plans and teaching materials) of the Interactive
Media Design Diploma program, particularly the Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI) related modules, such as User Interaction Design,
New Media Development, and e-Commerce.

I would love to contribute on the areas of curriculum development,
and Industry/Academia collaboration.

Cheers,

I have been trying hard to find online certificate courses for me
educate myself with and have come up with nothing so far that match
my criterion.
Also there are not many or practially not any to the level here in
India that one would want to educate one with IxD credentials.
Can you let me know if IxDA is starting a education initiative world
wide? If so would it offer any online programs. I presume there
isn't much online for IxD enthusiasts.

Hi,

I'm a colleague of Itamar's at Autodesk and have worked in HF, HCI,
usability and interaction design since 1973. I teach a course in
prototyping methods at Bentley college and cover a wide range of methods
from ideation techniques for generating ideas to personas, wireframes,
storyboards, wizard of OZ methods, interactive prototyping, paper
prototyping, and many other techniques. I've also taught courses on
questionnaire design, the use of metaphor in design, brainstorming methods,
usability evaluation methods, techniques for field studies, and other
topics.

I would be quite interested in supporting the IxDA curriculum development.

Thanks,
Chauncey

Sachin,

I have had similar "luck" with online courses. I think Iowa State
and Rensselaer Polytechnic have online Human Computer Interaction
courses, but these are far more technical than most IxD positions
seem to be (meaning they go into software development more than most
IxDers would say is part of a daily life).

I have sent my information to the email address, I would love to
help.

Is this initiative still under way? I haven't "heard" / seen any
new responses. Do you need help coordinating? I can even lend a
hand there!

James, You are right, I am still trying to find any more new
responses. It really would help people like me who are trying so
desperately wanting to take these certificate course. I wish you
could help me with it James. The one i have currently come up with is
Academy of Art, San Francisco. It does not give me easy online
learning options.

Hi Jeremy --

I don't have much time to volunteer, but I'm happy to discuss my
experience. I was the first leader of the education initiative for
the Information Architecture Institute, and subsequently started my
own company to teach design-related skills. I think I could save you
a lot of pain trying things that don't work well.

Hey there,

I was introduced to User Experience Design/Architecture just over a year ago. As of now my core skills lean towards Interaction Design more than user research or IA.

Unfortunately most User Experience courses I've come across focus more on user research than interaction or information design.

I am as of now in India and the only university in the country that offers such courses (NID) claims to have information and interaction design but I do not see any requirements or syllabus posted online for the interaction and information design courses.

What I look forward to is an industry certifiable course or at least course ware for the same in IxD.
