I've been using it for a couple of days now and while I dont feel
it's going to be an integral part of my workflow I do see it being
useful in cross functional teams where other members can contribute
but do not have visio/omnigraffle.

I intend to introduce developers on my team to the app as a way to
get their ideas 'down on paper'. I see the super low barrier to
entry as a way to get team members _involved_ in presentation layer
discussion, thus building consensus through a more interactive
discussion.

I am a little apprehensive that the libraries (aka stencils) reside
on their server but as long as we keep our artifacts generic we'll
avoid and property concerns.

As an aside, we had Jesse Beach give a talk on HTML5 and specifically
the Canvas element (on which Pencil is built) at the recent IxDA
event...

Coupled with the work from Aza Raskin and John Resig I'm _very_
excited about the rapid pace of development in the browser space.

Aza demo'd contextfree.js recently
http://www.vimeo.com/1202830

And John ported in Processing.js a few months back
http://ejohn.org/blog/processingjs/

Watch out for IxDA Boston's September event where John will be
giving a tutorial on jQuery.

I was impressed enough to contact the developer -- the normal community
tools I expect of an open source project were missing from the site. It's
built on Mozilla, using the app-runtime XUL Runner and is a GPL project.
Coming soon it seems to http://code.google.com/p/evoluspencil

I had an immediate need to do some site map / IA work and was willing to
hack in JJG's visual vocabularly. No support for much other than some
generic desktop UI for now. I started a port of the VisVocab to Mozilla
SVG/XBL (a sort of "sprite" or UI ojbect in XUL) way back in '04 --
http://www.surfmind.com/musings/2004/03/11/.

IMHO, the Firefox space has been ripe for a long time.. The newish Canvas
tech is actually way over-rated, the compound DOM is much cooler (see a mix
of SVG, XUL, & HTML visualizing mouse movement
http://www.surfmind.com/masters/screens/the_making_of_a_visualization.html).
I'd hope Pencil uses this type of approach rather than Canvas.

Another new tool I haven't seen referenced here is the AdobeAIR app
(commercial): http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mockups/desktop --
intentionally casual prototypes in "hand drawn style".

Thanks so much for sending this, Dan. I've been searching for a decent
free IA tool for a volunteer project working with colleagues with
differing levels of technical ability and mostly online. Pencil looks
like it might fit our needs.

And hey, they build for Firefox. It works for me.

Hi Dan,

I was playing with this today using the Firefox version. I am a bit
frustrated because it could generate an html file instead of png. But, it's
free.

Cheers

Looks like they just have Linux and Windows versions available. I'll
wait until they have a Mac version. (Not intended as a poke or
anything, I just don't feel like firing up Parallels to check it out
at the moment. Would rather have something run native in my OS.)

Is it?
Can it generate HTML files?
I would love if it can.

Cheers!!!

It works on Mac in FF3. I haven't pounded real hard on it, but it didn't
crash on me.

Currently, the hyperlink is not activated too. However, it has inserted
hyperlink button. Anyone figure out how to activate that hyperlink?

Maybe on placeholder for the next release version.

cheers,
Chan

Well I haven't played with it too much yet, however, I've just gotten an
email from the developer today accepting my help with technical writing,
testing, and templates. I can definitely bring your questions and
suggestions up with him.

Cheers,
Erica

I did some quick mockups a couple of days ago. i think it has a lot
of promise, but the stencil set is just to small for me yet. And I'd
love a way to get some others imported.

I'll continue to check it out, but it's just not enough for me to use yet.

Ben

I have just started using it. I have a nice wee mockup of an idea and I am stumped at what I am supposed to do to export to HTML. It says I need to load an html template. I can't find any downloads on their site and I can't find any on the web. Am I missing the obvious?

Thanks
