Description of Position
The user interface designer will apply their skills to developing
concepts for user interface designs on enterprise mobility products
and will support senior designers on the development of user
interfaces through all stages of product development. The user
interface designer will participate in collaborative projects as a
member of high-energy multidisciplinary teams including other
researchers, industrial designers, and engineers. The individual could
interact with customers as part of generative research activities.
Knowledge of relevant design software is critical including Photoshop,
Illustrator, Dream weaver, Flash or their equivalents.
Exposure to human factors research methodologies relevant to designing
user interfaces would be an asset.
Knowledge of Windows Mobile or other relevant OS would be an asset
Knowledge of HTML or other relevant programming languages would be an asset
Bachelor's degree program in interface or industrial design
Master's degree preferred
Strong oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint

The Innovation and Design team is a strategic part of the Enterprise
Mobility Business and includes the disciplines of industrial design,
user experience design, design research and advanced product
development. Our studio is located at the business headquarters in
Holtsville NY, situated on Long Island half way between New York City
and the Hamptons.
The products we develop are often handheld computers and scanners.
Understanding the customer's business processes and associated human
factors issues are critical to our success. To this end the team
conducts extensive and highly structured design research visiting over
133 customers and partners in 2007 alone. The team hosts customer and
partner visits here at our NY studio and conducts onsite interviews
and observational research at our customer's places of business.
The Innovation & Design team is heavily involved in both H1 (products
under development) and H2 (new innovations) programs. Our industrial
design, user experience team work directly with development groups on
product programs through the entire development process. This includes
handheld products with both hardware and software UI challenges as
well as web based solutions used primarily for device deployment and
Our H2 innovation work focuses on de-risking new technologies or new
market opportunities before products are committed to development.
This exploration is conducted in close collaboration with product
divisions. The innovation & Design group also facilitates a division
wide innovation pipeline process and actively pitches and prototypes
new product ideas. Given the team's in-depth customer knowledge and
our cross divisional perspective we play a critical and strategic role
within Motorola's Enterprise Mobility business.
