To me the worst thing about these machines is that the speech drops all the
articles: "Place item in bag. Enter PIN on PIN Pad Device. Take receipt."
That drives me up the wall.

If only anyone had one shred of evidence that people can successfully
interact with talking robots that talk like robots.

The vast majority of people have no control over their intense preference
for talking/interacting with someone/thing that talks "like them". See
