New Book on Prototyping Now Available
I just wanted to let everyone now that Michael Arent, Nevin Berger and I
wrote a book on the practice of effective prototyping, it is published by
Morgan-Kaufman (Elsevier) and is currently available at both physical and
online bookstores.
Our book is written in three parts. The first part covers the Effective
Prototyping process. This section attempts to bring prototyping to a new
level of sophistication beyond just low versus high fidelity and make it a
manageable, repeatable and flexible activity: call it our whitebox approach
to prototyping.
The second and third parts of the book are more reference works. The second
part covers the many different prototyping methods, including wireframes,
storyboards, paper prototyping, wizard of oz, blank model etc. It is a
reference on how to carry out these various forms of prototyping and why you
would want to use them.
The third section covers prototyping tools. It is not so much geared to the
power prototype user but more to the user who needs to get out a decent
prototype quickly. We advocate that any software tool you know well is a
potential prototyping tool. The theory behind this claim is that your
proficiency in a tool will more than make up for the lack of so-called
prototyping functionality. Rather than cover classic prototyping tools, we
cover the rapid or everyday software prototyping tools. Some you are already
familiar with, such as Visio and PowerPoint. Others you may not realize can
be powerful prototyping tools, such as Excel or Acrobat.

In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they are not.

Maybe they should have prototyped it first. ;)
