I'm curious if people knew of other companies that were like Frog or Ideo.
Product Design consultancies that merge traditional industrial design and
emerging digital design into a next venue for interaction design?

I want to be a bit more proactive in my search for a perfect job and maybe
look for people to do some information interviews with. I'm particularly
interested if these companies are somewhere along a major NYC based transit
system. ;)

Thanx!

Hi Dave,
"a next venue for interaction design" ??

All the firms that come to my mind are on the West coast, but you
should check the Firm Search on coroflot[1]. The search I did for firms
offering industrial and interaction design services returned 146
matches in NYC.

You might also ask Victor Lombardi or Mark Hurst.

I'm also interested in working within a multidisciplinary team and
organization that brings together both physical and interaction design
elements.

I've found CORE77's job site http://www.coroflot.com/ has a very
thorough listing of product design firms. For David's particular
contraints in NYC, perhaps this may help get you started:
http://www.coroflot.com/public/company_search_results.asp?keywords=
<http://www.coroflot.com/public/company_search_results.asp?keywords=&nam
e=&city=&state=33&country=0&organization_type=1>
&name=&city=&state=33&country=0&organization_type=1

On a similar note, Marc Rettig wrote in his "Interaction design history
in a teeny little nutshell" of how technology will move towards being
dynamically enabled:

"some are beginning to imagine (and work toward) a day when we complete
the shift.
from "we adapt to the machines"
to "our environment and tools adapt to us as we move through life""

I'm pretty sure "moving through life" doesn't mean sitting at a desk in
front of a screen all day and I think this is where product design and
interaction design will come closer together. I'm particularly
interested in experiences that people have had designing for
interactions in broader physical contexts away from office desktop
screens. Does anyone have any design experiences they can share?

Thanks,
~Alex Tam

On the topic of Continuum - we're looking to hire a visually-oriented designer into our Product Behavior group... looks like the specific position fell off Coroflot, but here's a more general description:

BTW, I love this title and description:
Product Behavior Designer

Your buzz comes from poking a product and seeing how it responds. You think
creatively within structure, and can structure your creative thinking. A
background in visual but an understanding of the technical, or vice-versa;
you speak the language of the designer and of the engineer. Not afraid to
test your theories – on the contrary, you demand they be tested, and you can
crank out a prototype in a minute. You like software and you like hardware,
the virtual and the physical.

This is so what I think IxD is about, and so the type of position I'm
looking for.
1. Its in Boston ... Gotta be in NYC
2. like you said below you are lookin' for someone w/ a visual design bent.
3. Well, its in Boston. ;)

But it is great to see people writing job descriptions like this one.

G-d I wish IxD's can really telecommute like some other positions.

David,
I was distracted by the lively discussions on interaction design-commertial
design crossroads. Here is another resource for finding companies and that
next job: http://www.thefirmlist.com/

It has a broad range of companies from SBI Group (formerly Razorfish) to who
knows emptyproject?
