Hello everyone,

I'm interested in some examples of excellent online portfolios for
interaction designers.

What's the best way to represent one's work to potential employers?

Anyone have some rockin' examples they want to share with the group?

To that I would also love to see good examples of IxD portfolios (coming
from a UI Designer trying to make the transition to IxD)... which also might
help out other Junior IxD's on the list.

Thanks,
David

That's one topic that I'm really interested too... I'm used to see only
graphic design portfolios...
Which is the best way to present your works to an employer?

Yep, I think that's one of the conundrums of our industry. I don't know if
the people who are recruiting (other than inside the industry) know what
they want to see either.

As an example, I am currently on a search mode for tsomething and have had a
number of recruiters contact me regarding UI Design, IxD, and Information
Architecture. What I find , shall I say amazing, is that I've had a few of
those who want to recruit for IxD, but in the job description it's more
about UI Design. Then, they've looked at my portfolio and asked to see
different stuff.

What are you showing in your folio? What kind of "different stuff" are they
looking to see? When you say the job description is more about "UI Design",
do you mean more the visual side of the coin? Or...?

In my portfolio I show both UI design and IA (as well as visual design).
Both my resume and job site profile indicate I am specifically looking for
UI Design. But I've had 3rd party recruiters contact me for a position as an
IxD, then ask to see IxD work (but don't specify exactly the type of work
that is).

To your question, yes, many of the UI Design job descriptions want to see
visual design and coding skills. To me, not exactly IxD.

If IAs and IxDs and all the rest of us can't agree exactly on what our
titles should be and what they mean, you can sure as hell bet that
recruiters don't get it either.

As a hiring manager, my approach is: portfolios are great, but you'd
better be able to explain your work and sell me as to why your approach
works.

I just had a hand in hiring someone (junior) who didn't have a
portfolio, but I got him to whiteboard out one of his projects and
explain it to me in the interview. Then again he already had a foot in
the door through other means so if you aren't already working there,
you'll generally lose out to the people who do have good portfolios.

Are we going to go into the "title problem" of the UX community? Please say
it ain't so.

Lisa this issue is nothing new. You have to find a recruiter that
understands what you do and in your case it is very very rare to find
someone like you. Most of us do a mix of IA, IxD, UI Design and sometimes
coding. Very few people specialize in only IxD.

But titling is one of the biggest problems for both sides of the hiring
line.

I'm a bit late to this thread but when I was going through grad school and working on my own portfolio, I kept a list of portfolios that I liked on del.icio.us:

http://del.icio.us/dorkyspice/portfolios

My list is all over the board - some are more suited for visual designers, while others are more focused on UX. In quickly glancing through the list again, there are very few that describe/illustrate their process and project outcomes.

When I was applying for full time jobs last spring (and internships the spring before that), most employers looked at my portfolio and brought it up during the interview. When I interviewed for my current job, I was even asked to give an hour-long portfolio presentation.

Having sat through several portfolio presentations myself in the past year, I'm amazed by the number of portfolios and presentations that don't actually follow the basic principles of user experience. It's also easy to show a few screenshots/wireframes/storyboards but actually describing the design process, justifications for design, and project outcomes is a much much harder skill (IMHO).
