I'd say partly as an aethetic choice, and partly because the skinning
engine can support it. Note it isn't there if you turn off skinning (choose
*Classic* in the *Messenger–>Change Skin…* dialog).
You can also "fix" it, or tweak the skin however you want. Just play around
with the files in C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Shared\Graphics\ (the default skin
is named *Indigo*).
