Event description:
With 1 in 10 US adults already owning a wearable device, there is a growing interest in making technology wearable so it can seamlessly enmesh with our bodies and our everyday lives. We constantly hear of a new wearable product announced or released. But, at the same time research shows that one-third of these adults no longer use their devices after just six months, with the number jumping to 50% for fitness trackers. How can designers help make these services more than a shiny new toy and fit them into people’s lives in a meaningful way?

In this 2.5 hour workshop, participants will gain a deeper perspective for the opportunities and challenges when designing for wearables. They will learn about Fjord’s approach to problem-solving and get an overview of the different service design tools we use everyday.

By actively working through a design challenge, participants will work in groups to generate ideas for wearables products, using selected methods and tools to help conceive, validate, and improve upon concepts. At the end, each group will be asked to present their ideas for discussion and feedback.

This workshop is presented by Petra Farinha, Jadie Oh, and Nour Diab, who organize Fjord's regular Design Clinics. Design Clinic is a design-focused gathering that Fjord’s New York studio hosts weekly. When we are deeply involved in our everyday work, we sometimes need a reminder about all of the great things happening in design outside of our projects and the great people around us. So every week, we share our passion for design, have a conversation about it, ideate together, invite brilliant minds outside of Fjord, or go out to hunt for inspiration. And yes… we do all of that with beer.
