Fjord ( is a design agency specialising in cross-platform digital service design. We are currently working on a long-term EU funded R&D project in the area of interconnected embedded objects Smarcos ( This is a new area of development for Fjord, and a key opportunity for us to develop expertise in designing for new forms of device, including tangible interactions and pervasive/ubiquitous systems.

We are looking for a full-time Senior Researcher to work in our London office on a fixed-term contract to the end of 2012. The Senior Researcher will work exclusively on the Smarcos project and will be responsible for day to day co-ordination of the project and team, developing creative research and design methods and helping the wider Fjord team develop skills and knowledge in embedded object design and research methods.

Key qualifications & experience required

An interest in tangible computing, ubiquitous computing, connected embedded objects and mobile devices is essential.  Experience working in design and research in one or more of these areas is highly desirable.

A good academic working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods gained to at least masters and ideally PhD level in a social science or human-computer interaction related topic is essential. Ideally, you will have extensive hands-on experience in organising research projects in academic or commercial settings. 

An ability to apply research methods in commercial settings is essential. Ideally, you will have some commercial experience in an interaction design or user experience research role.

You should possess demonstrable creative design or design facilitation skills, ideally for mobile and other ubiquitous technologies. A keen interest in empathic and creative design as well as purely functional HCI is essential, as is comfort working with conceptual design.

Some experience co-ordinating the work of a small project team is essential. Experience of working on complex projects over an extended period is essential. You must be highly efficient in organising time and resources across multiple work streams.
