Description: 

This job contributes to REI’s success by creating and managing REI’s interaction design strategy and execution. The ideal candidate has a proven ability to lead and mentor an interaction design team in a collaborative environment, and demonstrated experience in utilizing brand messaging and strategy for innovative and revenue-driving features. Proven record of delivery of web site and mobile device interactions that combine strong usability with an engaging experience and integrated brand communications. Contributes to high-impact eCommerce development initiatives, and acts as an eCommerce representative in cross-divisional forums. Models and acts in accordance with REI’s guiding values and mission.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Creates, defines and manages the interaction design strategy and execution for REI websites and mobile devices.
• Identifies and implements process improvements and design methodologies for team efficiency and effectiveness.
• Directs, manages and mentors the interaction design team including daily work oversight as well as career development and annual performance reviews.
• Works with cross divisional teams to contribute to maximizing and improving cross channel customer experiences.
• Manages resources and design strategy for multiple projects simultaneously from strategy planning to launch.
• Creates and maintains guidelines, specifications and interaction pattern libraries to ensure that all digital products have a similar design approach.
• Works closely with User Experience, Information Architecture, and Brand Creative to create optimal digital customer experiences.
• Observes and analyzes website and mobile device use and creates positive interactions based on quantitative and qualitative customer behavior and feedback.
• Provides guidance in best-practices for user centered interaction design.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of new and existing interaction design elements, using quantitative and qualitative analysis, competitive landscape, and industry standard best practices.
• Contributes to strategic planning, applying current knowledge and future vision of interaction design which significantly impact the effective execution of REI’s customer experiences.

Qualifications:

5+ years experience with interaction design methodologies.
• 3+ years building and leading teams.
• Extensive experience with Photoshop and Illustrator.
• Familiarity with one or more current web markup or scripting languages: XHTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX.
• Deep understanding of interaction design methods, techniques and best practices.
• Demonstrated experience in leading interaction design of social media and online communities.
• Good understanding of benefits and constraints of internet and mobile technologies.
• Strong understanding of internet marketing & advertising, digital engagement and related topics.
• Experience working via agile methodologies strongly preferred.
• Previous eCommerce design experience strongly preferred.
• Previous Mobile design experience preferred.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to promote open communication and teamwork.
• Strong knowledge of related disciplines such as information management, content strategy and brand communications.
• Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in small and large groups at all levels of an organization.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
• Experience in working on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to document and present strategies, standards, and concepts to both business and IT audiences.
• Degree preferred in related discipline: information architecture, interaction or interface design, human-computer interaction (or equivalent).
