Description: 

Whirlpool Corporation is sponsoring an internship in User Experience / Interaction Design intended to complement a university graduate student's education.  Interns collaborate with talented user experience designers to help create the next generation of home appliances, making a meaningful impact on products that millions of people use every day.  Work is performed at Whirlpool's Global Consumer Design studios and labs in Benton Harbor, Michigan, for a 3-month term starting in May or June.  The internship is a paid position with salary and partial benefits.
 
In this position, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Analyze customer needs, conduct technology assessments, and conduct benchmark comparisons of products.
  • Apply user-centered design principles to create user interaction design concepts for a variety of portable and major appliances for different regions and brands.
  • Conduct human factors research and usability studies during product design and development.

Qualifications

 
What you will need to succeed in this position: 
  • Matriculated in a graduate degree program in Human Factors, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, Psychology, or a related discipline.
  • Coursework in human performance, graphics design, cognitive psychology, computer science, visual interaction design, technical communication, or statistics and experimental design.
  • Knowledge about human/computer interaction, information architecture, and product user interface design.
  • Knowledge of user-centered design practices, e.g., ethnography, user needs analysis, participatory design, and usability testing.
  • Practice designing, planning, conducting, and interpreting results from behavioral research experiments.
  • Skills creating and prototyping user interface designs using popular interaction design tools.
  • Competent communication and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of hardware product design, ergonomics, and anthropometrics is a plus.
