Adobe Fireworks for wire framing

Recently I have been getting increasingly frustrated by the
limitations of Omnigraffle and the complexity and bugs of using
Visio, not to mention having to switching between operating systems
to use Visio when i am a mac user.

So I am very interested in the increase in talk of people using
Fireworks for wire framing, what i read about it makes perfect sense
with the ability to share layers across specific pages, making
symbols to reuse across the document, so a footer for example can be
a symbol, you edit the symbol and the footers across the sites pages
will update, not to mention master pag

Are carousels effective?

This begs the question that people will care about the _content
inside_ the carousel!

You could base your interaction design on existing design patterns
documenting carousels, but the usability of it does not cause people
to care about what the client is promoting nor compel them to click
through.

Make sure you're asking the right questions, soving the right
problems. In this case, it sounds like the primary challenge is
validating that the content is important, meaningful, and valuable to
the people visiting that site.

Hope this helps,
Jay

Scholarly works and findability - best practices?

All:

Does anyone have experience adding subject organization to small collections
of digital scholarly resources in a way that's long-term scalable but
short-term usable? I'm working on a project about a nearly-dead language,
and one of the site's components allows users to search/browse metadata for
scholarly resources (these metadata will contain links to the resources
themselves.) At the beginning there will be perhaps 20 items in the list;
eventually there may be hundreds.

User Experience Research Issues

I am reading a book about User Experience and came across the
following in the Research Plan chapter:

"The competitors' design is a lot less polished and much more
chaotic, yet they get twice as much traffic with a similar amount of
advertising."

How can you find such information about the competitor's traffic?

Is such information available for everyone?

"Way Out" vs "Exit" - Signage usability andpassenger experience

Just a few thoughts on 'exit' versus 'way out':
- 'way out' is not that uncommon in Europe
- 'exit' is an unusual word in written and spoken English (I cannot
recall the last time I wrote it)
- it is also impossible to work out what 'exit' means if you do not
already know (unless you happen to speak Latin!)

(For anyone interested, word frequency in English is inversely
proportional to word length in syllables.
