ANN: Agile UX Primer web seminar

warning: some self promotion here - but I believe it's relevant to
some in the group.

Tomorrow, Wed Mar 4th, I'll be presenting a 90 minute web seminar on
agile development and user experience practice. It's pretty short,
but for some it may be a helpful overview.

More information is here: http://www.uie.com/events/virtual_seminars/agile/

I'll spend about a third of the time reviewing agile development -
trying to communicate more from a UX practitioners perspective.

Video autoplay

Good Morning Ixda!

Working on a project for a business who relies heavily on video autoplay to
drive up video views and ad inventory. As a UCD practitioner, I wholly
believe in my heart of hearts that more is lost than gained in turning
people away from the site based on the aggravation and annoyance of
autoplay. I'm attempting to build a case that removing autoplay will incease
visits, page views, and time spent metrics in the long run. Additionally,
the business will have a better understanding of content consumed by site
visitors by providing an on demand experience.

[LOCAL] Dallas UX Book Club - first meeting report & upcoming events

Four of us met at Nerdbooks last Saturday and had a good discussion on Sketching User Experiences. We had an interesting variety of industry experience there: two of us were IA, one a lighting console designer, and one a voice interaction designer.

We decided going forward that we'd:
- Meet every other month due to busy schedules and reading loads.
- Alternate meetings on Saturdays versus Wednesdays so the maximum number of folks could attend.
- Try to move locations around, again, to try and get the most number of folks.

We picked two books and two dates.

Bread crumb or left navigation (or both)?

A website has a left navigation and a bread crumb. The left navigation is an exact copy of the bread crumb (or the other way around). They both take up valuable real estate on the screen.

My idea would be to do away with the bread crumb because the visitor sees at any moment where exactly (s)he is in the website in the left navigation. By eliminating the bread crumb, the amount of "real content" would increase by 10% and people would have to scroll less and less frequently.

Do you guys agree?

Thanks in advance.
