1st reminder: CALL FOR PAPER: aaate 2009 conference

Hello there,

I already posted this last month, but there could probably be someone new in the Forum who could be interested, so I'm re-posting this call for paper.

I also take the chance to launch a proposal: It'd be cool to meet if some of you is working in Italy. Just come up in some way and we'll try to arrange something.

How to cue people for drag and drop

I have a screen with a slightly unusual UI. There is a table of rows
that can be edited in place, but you can also drag and drop the rows,
somewhat in the style of Excel. You can also drag the rows onto
targets adjacent to the grid.

The question is - how do I give people reasonable visual cues that
drag-and-drop are acceptable actions here?

Given that there are a large number of drop targets, I can't think of
a good design pattern other than drag-drop for this but I'm open to
suggestions on that as well.

Any thoughts?

[JOB] UX Senior Manager in Fremont CA - Full time

Hey all -

this client of mine is looking to hire someone internal. This will be
the first time they have hired a UX person for a new software
division. This looks to be a really interesting position with
oversight on software design for touchscreen, voice and traditional
computers. They are looking for someone senior who can do hands on
design, manage a small team and external design partners.

Visual Design Candidates

Hello List,

Have been tasked with ramping up the UX/UE roles at my company (I currently
occupy the IxD role).

One of the areas I have identified that we do not currently have dedicated
staff for are Visual Designers. We have capable people, but no one that
specializes in web application interface mock ups/visual comps. (I'm sure a
lot of small web app. companies fall into this category).

Vote for a Department of Innovation

I'm forwarding this from another group. I think it's something this
community might be interested in:

Cognate with the notion of a National Design Policy, advanced at the
recent US National Design Policy Summit organized by Dori Tunstall, is
the concept of a new US Department of Innovation. Now we have a
chance to create one.

On Change.org, the website created by the Obama Transition team to
solicit new ideas for the next four years, Alain Rostain has proposed
the creation of a Department of Innovation.

Google by default

I'm sure we've all witnessed on how common it is for a user-experience
to begin at Google these days, even when the user has a known
destination/item.

I do it myself. For instance, say I want to look up 'Brighton' on
Wikipedia, I find the most efficient method of getting there to type
'wikipedia brighton' into my browser's in-built google search. This is
all based on the assumption that this will be the first result (it
normally is) and therefore the quickest way for me to achieve my goal.

This is certainly borne-out in the research I'm doing at the moment.
