Need an Image: Copier Internal with Troubleshooting Guides

Random question:

I'm looking for a good photo of the internals of a copier with the 1,2,3
and color coded handles for clearing a paper jam. It's proving harder
than you'd think to get a good one.

Anyone got a good source?

Error Messages (Was: Hiding and Disabling Menu Items)

In fact, based on this conversation, I'm going to toss out one other
possible best practice:

The system should never present an error message to a user unless the
user has done everything right but the system itself cannot respond
correctly. Users should otherwise never be allowed to make "errors."

(Flickr, for instance, does this very well.)

Remote card sort

Can anyone present any convincing arguments for *not* using a remote
card sorting technology - like websort.net? And instead insisting that
card sorting must be performed in person?

Tangent: what is your opinion on performing card sorting one-to-one
individually vs in a group? ...

Aaaaaaaand begin!

(and thanks)

John

What will thousands of CPU cores unlock?

We have signals that Intel isn't going to settle with 8 or 16
processor cores and then revert back to let's-add-more-MHz contest.
They are going to add 32, 64, 128, 512, 1024 and 2048 cores per CPU.
(Reference: http://tinyurl.com/4pkslx) ... expect to see 8-core 500
Mhz Intel Atom processors for ten dollars each.

We have signals that at least Apple is trying to make it easier for
developers to use those cores.

Usability evaluation in a day

Regarding:
http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=30937

In my company we have very good experiences using this method:

http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1028050

The Instant Data Analysis (IDA) allows us to conduct a usability evaluation
with 5 users per day and have feedback to the developers ready the next day.
The IDA method strengths is that the most important usability issues will be
found and communicated to the developers in a very fast manner.

Weighting Search Results

Hi,

I have a new job with a client working on a business application. Right now they
have their simple search configured so that if a user searches on the letter "a"
the results contain all objects with the letter "a" anywhere in the name. I
realize and they realize that this is not ideal and they asked me how they should
prioritize there search results.
