[ixda] horizontal log in fields on web apps

HiI've been noticing that a lot of web applications like Virb, Vimeo,
Pageonce, etc have a horizontal form for the log in. How usable is this?
Is it better / worse than the standard practice of displaying the username &
password fields vertically?
Best,
Soo

Favorite article on design research

Hiya,

If you had to read 1 article on design research which one would it be?
Does anyone know of an article from Brenda Laurel?
I'm not interested in the standard stuff about Contextual design or
Goal-Directed Design stuff.

Mindset and SmartSort

Does anyone know where I can find information concerning the apparent
discontinuation of Yahoo's Mindset and SmartSort features?

We've referenced them in the past concerning the use of sliders,
but SmartSort appears to have switched to radio buttons (http://
tinyurl.com/6fyypk) and Mindset (http://mindset.research.yahoo.com/)
appears to be down.

Thanks,
Erin

User know-how about drop-down boxes

Hello list :)

A client of mine suggested an auto-complete field for a certain feature.
He also said the following: if a user is too lazy to type (which might be
true, as power users are
the ones who use the keyboard - or is it?) we should also provide a classic
drop-down box with
all the available options.

Now, my question relates to the usefulness of auto-completes.
Don't you think that the users know that if they click a drop-down box, they
can type in the first letter
of what they are looking for and the browser would select the first option
that starts with that letter for them?
