Does Forrester know about interaction design?

I was just reading through Forrester's report "The Seven Tenets Of The
Information Workplace" by Erica Driver and Connie Moore.

Among others, it recommends that IT departments acquire usability and
design skills. Note the last sentence in the quote:

"We're just starting to see IT groups design applications first and
foremost to adapt to change and give business people powerful
workplaces. These skills will be in short supply, and so consulting
firms will initially fill the needs of most organizations.

Introducing design to a dev team for the first time

Hi all,

I am currently the tech writer for a team that develops several products
that are used internally within the company. Traditionally, these have only
had a command-line interface. Recently, though, they have started developing
GUI front-ends for these systems.

As a wannabe IxDer, I have used my position to give feedback on what they
have built, in an attempt to improve usability.

six sigma vs. ucd?

I have recently come across Six Sigma methodology (also Design for Six
Sigma), and was wondering if anyone on the mailinglist has experience
applying this methodology when it comes to "design, user experience and
Do you think it can substitute or perhaps even promote user-centered design
approach in a business context?
I would be glad to get some tips about best practices and case studies
regarding this topic, thanks.

Persona Names

I am running a persona workshop with our client partners to flesh out
some of the behavioral aspects. As part of a "fun" exercise, we would
like to have persona naming as part of the event. Normally, when I
pick names, I make up something based on my IM list, mashups of TV
characters from shows I watched recently, or something along those

Does anyone have a process in place (or ideas) for how our group might
choose names collaboratively?

[IxDA-SF EVENT] Herding Cats and Taming Lions: Using Facilitation Skills to Create Better Design

Hello friends!

Our May event is actually dipping into the first part of June
(Tuesday, 6/3), but we have a great one planned! Jon Litell of Hot
Studio will be talking about facilitation and other underrepresented
but vital “soft skills”. Adaptive Path will be our gracious hosts for
the evening, and we’re planning another Hiring Salon (employers/
recruiters: bring job descriptions to share).

Chat link

At the risk of reopening the Twitter vs. IRC discussion, I'd like to
mention that Jeff Howard has been kind enough to set up a link to the
IxDA chat channel:

This link currently redirects to our #ixda channel on Freenode, but in
the future it might go somewhere else. The point is that if you want
to chat with other IxDA members in real time, that's the place to go.
Please consider including that link in Tweets or emails to the list as
an indication that you'd like to chat about your topic.

Is a Flash-intro to a personal portfolio stillgood/relevant?

If I'm hiring someone who needs to have Flash experience and will work
in Flash environments, that Flash intro has made the difference, but I
evaluate it at the same level as the rest of their portfolio: 1) it's
theirs and 2) it's reflective of their knowledge of Flash (be it
development, interaction, or visual design - whatever appropriate to the

If I'm hiring someone who doesn't need that experience, I'm still super
critical of it - often I find someone has grabbed it from someplace,
edited to their needs; but doesn't have the technical prowess to
actually make that intro reflect the
