Worth Reading: "The Product Ecology: Understanding Social Product Use and Supporting Design Culture"

The field of interaction design has broadened its focus from issues
surrounding one person interacting with one system to how systems are
socially and culturally situated among groups of people. To understand
the situations surrounding product use interaction design researchers
have turned to qualitative, ethnographic research methods.

Basecamp alternative UI and 37Signals

Hello good fellows!

Currently, I'm in the process of building with my small studio a Basecamp
alternative. I think most of you know 37signals Basecamp and their user
interface. For those who have seen the application grow up, you will notice
now it's cluttered in features and before, was much more simple to get
around it; although, it's still one of the best out there.

Now comes the question.

- What are the weak points you see on the user interface of Basecamp?

That's all.

Sites That Rock -- WAS: Sites with good examples of bad UIs?

Chauncey,

Perhaps this is where we should start a thread on web sites that rock.
Define "rock"? Sites that a reasonable UX person armed with a reasonable set
of heuristics might consider great design...

Not just an opinion, though - apply some rules to your decision, a good
starting point is J. Nielson's list. He did not just pull the list out of
his nether regions, however (ewww!). They come from analyzing more than 200
usability problems and statistically reducing the set to the 10 most
important rules:

1. Visibility of system status (what's going on!)
2.

Sites with good examples of bad UIs?

I hesitate to ask this, because I have lost hours wandering around in such
sites, but anyway:
I'd appreciate recommendations for sites that analyze/discuss/make fun of
bad UI designs. Examples are www.buigallery.com*, http://www.baddesigns.com,
etc. I know I have seen others but I'm not remembering/finding them at the
moment.

Thanks,

Al

* I love the "snarky comments" on this site. Spent way too long clicking and
laughing yesterday.

Usability = Predictability

"Usability equals predictability."

As in, if you can accurately predict what's going to happen next in an
interaction, it's because the action you're taking is understandable, clear,
logical, makes you feel confident, etc. If you can accurately predict what's
next, the interaction has high usability. If you can't accurately predict
what's next, the interaction has low usability.

Shoot holes in that statement.
