Online brochure vs. PDF download

Does anyone have any recommendations/ preferences with regard to online
brochures?
We have the option of providing a downloadable pdf that users can view/print
out for reading later, and/or going with a zmags.com solution that takes the
print brochure(s) and displays it rather sleekly in it's own window (Ikea
applies this solution). There is a link to download the brochure from the
zmag approach, but I don't think it's immediately evident to the user. Are
there any stats/suggestions?

Desktop GUI prototyping tools...

Hi

Any recommendations on GUI prototyping tools specially for desktop
application prototyping. I could find a good list at
http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?GuiPrototypingTools and am looking at any feedback
on the ones listed or maybe a new tool not listed there but somebody has
used and strongly recommends.

The need is to capture the paper prototypes into higher fidelity prototypes
that can be tested and reviewed before getting commited for actually coding.

Thanks
Pankaj

Don Norman on ACD at Apple?

Don Norman in Business Week earlier this month re-framing Apple's
design process as what sounds a little like activity centered design.
It's just a brief quote in a much longer article:

http://www.businessweek.com/print/magazine/content/08_02/b4066000313325.htm

> Apple's approach isn't about targeting hipsters, says Donald A.
> Norman, a professor at Northwestern University and author of The
> Design of Future Things.

I'll soon be offering a unique and exciting course via UCSC Extension
in Silicon Valley entitled, "User Experience Managers and Executives
Speak." The course is scheduled to meet 7 consecutive Wednesday
evenings from 13 February through 26 March, 2008.

A portion of the course description
(http://www.well.com/user/riander/mguxspk.html):

"How do user experience managers and executives achieve success? What
are their strategies? How do they approach the multitude of
organizational challenges they face?

IxD translation ?

Hi,

I've realised that it's not consensual the usage of Interaction Design
in English in all languages, for example in the translations of the
First Principles from Bruce Tognazzini (
http://www.asktog.com/basics/firstPrinciples.html) the translation it's not
made in German and Italian language, but in Polish, Spanish, and Dutch,
Interaction Design as a title, it's translated.

>From the IxDA point of view what's the most correct?

Best regards

Defining UCD

Good thought - let's move forward.

User Centered Design (UCD) is an approach to the design process that
emphasizes adding value to the end user as more important than the
inclusion of specific technologies, monetization or other motivations.

design process - and my role

I am going to hijack this tangent from the UCD discussion for the
moment.

Lots of designers fight their changing roles. From the independent
role where I get to decide everything that is 'design' to a
management role where I shepherd great work, or to a collaborative
environment with shared design responsibility - change is hard.
Design by committee is a much maligned notion, but a collaborate
group of designers with a single vision is extraordinarily powerful.
