Any guidelines/design patterns etc.. on when a downloadable format ( such as pdf/word/ppt) is appropriate compared to creating a webpage?

Hi everyone,

I would appreciate if anyone could point to me to any guidelines /
design patterns or some source on when a downloadable format ( such as
pdf / word /ppt) is a better option compared to creating a webpage.

For example, a website that talks about policies which are large
documents , it would be best if people are able to download the policy
and review it.

Or if its about a particular process, it would be best if they are
able to download the process and use the printed document to reference
while doing the process.

Any help you could provide will be much appreciated.

Thank You

Capturing International Addresses

Hey IxDAers,

I'm working on a system that will have users input addresses of locations
around the world. Has anyone seen or used a format that works well for this?
There will be a lot of US-based addresses, but also an equal number of
international addresses.

What fields do you present? For example, ZIP Codes are only applicable in
the US...so why present it to the rest of the world?

So, what have you seen or used?

FAQ? Elevator Pitch?

Another FAQ item that has caused a lot of confusion especially among
the newbies is so many Design Processes - User Centered Design Process,
Usage Centered Design Process, Activity Centered Design, Goal Driven
Design etc etc etc. Even though User and what he wants to accomplish
is a central part of each of these processes, each of them focuses on
a different attribute - activity, task, goal, usage, feature etc etc. This has
led to a lot of confusion and most people keep debating which to use
in which scenario.

Arial vs Vernada?

For a better reading experience: *Arial or Verdana?*

- If Arial is smaller than Verdana, why do we use arial for the majority of
web apps?
- If there any studies or facts about that?

PDF form v. HTML

I'm looking for information on the pros and cons of using a PDF form
to enter information that will feed into a database, versus a plain
old HTML form.

I don't have any experience with online PDF forms but my gut feeling
is that they might be less accessible and possibly harder to use
because of font issues and the like. Any thoughts?
