Fitts Law fits

I've been trying to figure out how to use Fitt's Law properly to
increase the targetability of a dense tree structure, as displayed on
a browser page.

The information in the hierarchy is three levels, call them Category,
Subcategory, and Items.

There are about 5 Categories, each of which has 3-10 Subcategories and
each subcategory has 1-15 Items.

Displaying these data in a conventional tree leads to a display that
is a grand pain to target on.

XML and accessibility

We're discussing a choice in making things accessible between better
authoring and better rendering. But there's a third way.

The problem of making even rich interfaces accessible would be somewhat
reduced if we had an additional abstraction layer in place. My suggestion
would be an intermediate XML language that has a real semantic foundation.

A primary design goal for XML as a framework for defining languages was to
establish a way to state the meaning of what is being communicated.

[Event] Reminder : Chicago IxDA - Oct. 10th - Design Pattern Libraries

Hello, fellow Chicagoans.
Hope to see you next Wednesday, October 10th!
Please RSVP so we can ensure enough space:
http://www.manifestdigital.com/survey/ixda/

-----------------------------------------------

If you're in the Chicago-land area, please join us for our first
topic-oriented event!

Topic: The 'WHAT', 'WHY' and 'HOW' of design pattern libraries
No one seems to be talking about pattern libraries these days, so we thought
we'd be the first to... oh, wait.
Ok, so everyone is talking about them. But WHAT are they?

Distinguishing between Internal and External links

Hi there,
I am curious to hear peoples' thoughts on the value of distinguishing
between internal links and external links in a large-scale web app.
I am currently working on a project that is being loosely modeled off of
Wikipedia; which does make a visual distinction between their internal and
external links.
In the context of an article on a particular subject this distinction
(between the internal and external links) seems rather appropriate.
Personally, if I am browsing a site and I like what I see I tend to avoid
external links in favor of internal links.

[Edutf-pp] Introduction

Derek,

I noticed that VolState.edu does not have a search box anywhere on its home
page. You should add one (I suggest using a Yahoo SiteSearch API) and start
logging searches. Statistics are very handy in political battles, and search
logs are among the most valuable stats you can get your hands on.

Some advice for your one-man redesign...

Get your hands on a copy of Web Redesign 2.0: Workflow that Works (Emily
Cotler and Kelly Goto).

Texas IxDers

I was wondering if there were any Texas IxD people on list...
specifically Austin or San Antonio. If so, do you have any IxD type
meetups?

David
