A great conversation about the convergence of technology, design and social trends.

Duh, a subject line would help huh?

Interesting 4 minute video entitled "Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us" that I haven't seen referenced here. It's a nice overview of how the intersection of new technology and social trends are influencing how we develop and interact with applications.

My desktop is invading the web

This morning i noticed that skype (which is running on my desktop)
is reformatting all of the listed telephone numbers i come across
online (for example under ixda members on gmail, bank contact pages etc) to
a link which automatically calls the number from skype, with a little
"call" icon.

I don't particularly mind this, but do the websites whos users experience is
(ever so slightly) changed? Will we see more of this, our desktop apps
interpreting our web pages, in the way browsers do?

How to emulate Jeff Han

How to build a cheap multi-touch display using materials available in
any IT storeroom or geek garage.

One of my co-workers tells me he knows some digital artists who've
built their own interactive displays using this basic formula.

Help with a project...

I'm requesting your help with a project. I'm running a questionnaire
to collect data that will support a presentation I'm proposing for an
upcoming professional conference.

The purpose of the questionnaire is to evaluate the knowledge that
usability practioners, software developers, technical writers, and
graphic designer have of George A.

ixd deliverables ...

I am curious to know the types of deliverables that other designers here
deliver as part of their process, etc, how they are used, and how helpful
they are to the people who get them. I currently deliver hard composites (a
png of a design), working prototypes (working html, css, javascript), what I
have been calling "user stories" (a walk through of the interaction that the
user goes through to complete a task), and UI documentation that describes
how things should work at the developers point of view so that they can have
a clear understanding of how to build things.

URLs without 'www' - having them work anyway

Morning,

Just noticed on one of our major web properties (1 of our 2 most important
in fact) the site gives an IIS "under construction" notice instead of
resolving to the site proper at the www space. I sent this in as a problem,
that the site should still work correctly (and should not be hard with a
.Net site, I don't think). While not common, people do tend to key urls in
sometimes that way (especially geeks).

I have a feeling I may get some pushback on this, I'm wondering if anyone
has any statistics or articles or whatever that might help me back up the
case.

iPhone compared

Here is an interesting iPhone review that compares it to the likes of
the N95, Blackberry 8800 class, Treo 755, and the Prada LG.
