The duration of emotional design

Hmm...<<temporary comfort>>...that's gotten me back on a topic that I've
been turning over in my mind for some time now: what is, and how to test
for, emotional response to an interface over *time*...

A group I was working with recently wanted to slow down the login page
to their site with a giant photo of a smiling woman. "We want our
login page to be more friendly," they explained.

browser compatability: Safari

Just posted a small website that works okay on Mozilla and IE, but exhibits
a non-functional artifact on Safari. Would appreciate any guidance in
troubleshooting/solving it.

Problem: Safari does not display scrollbars when page is bigger than
browser window

Environment: Am doing design work in Dreamweaver under Windows. My
client - and others w/ Safari browsers - report this dysfunction. I don't
have a Mac, so am "flying blind" on this one.

Possible culprits? This is a photo brochure site.

Anyone else having trouble getting used to Office 2007 menus?

I've got a new laptop with Office 2007 installed on it. And oh my goodness
am I ever sloooow getting anything done in Word or Powerpoint. I keep
searching for a "Revert" command in Word especially, where I'm normally
swift and assured. The missing Help menu spooks me too (it's a teensy button
now). Didn't find anything there, will check online next.

I'm sure they've tested the apps 1000s of times - I've seen their labs, been
a test subject, and know what pros MS are about usability testing. But here
I am, expert-level Word user for years, struggling.

Affordances in interface design

Hi Everyone,

I have a question that I'll preface with statement. I work for a
company that builds accounting software for the desktop. Screens for
data entry (i.e., paying bills, creating invoices) were designed to
look like the paper forms they were based on, and have looked like
this since the Windows 3.1 version of the software.

Research has shown us that new users frequently find this design
confusing.

Product Company Entrapreneurs (apologies for cross posting)

As a fund-raising fool, I attend a lot of SV networking events for
entrepreneurs. There are plenty of them. I meet marketers, engineers,
business folks... but never any designers or folks with design
backgrounds (unless it's Frank Ramirez.) This might be my luck, or it
might be a trend. I'd like to hear from folks why you think this
happens? why don't more ID's, Interaction designers, etc become product
company CEO's? And yes, I've heard of 37 signals... but even they took
a different outsider path.
