Where has the music gone?

I remember in the early days (pre web 1.0 and well before the birth of the
blog) that a lot of people coded (or at least used a WYSIWYG HTML
editor) small personal websites that contained huge lists of all theire
favourite things from films to trivial facts and not much else. One
thing however that does stick in my mind from those days is that people
often attached a sample of their favourite music track or sound bite as a
background sound to their homepage (and this was in the days of dial up
connections!).

Journaled sessions?

Any recommendations for software to help conduct (and log) remote
testing? Looking for one that would allow for the "journaling" part:
dialog boxes that request user feedback *during* the test in addition to
capturing click paths.

Rationale for *not* using UCD

I'm working on a little side project at the moment that involves
collecting as many reasons as I can come across as to why
people/project teams decide not to use User Centred Design
methodologies when designing/developing projects.

We have the obvious ones down (not enough time, not enough money, no
UCD 'expert' on staff), but I'm sure you've come across a lot of more
or less rational explanations for not using UCD.

I'd love to hear them!

check-out and trust (was...Google Checkout'scredit card widget)

Jay,
It would really educate me if you would fill in the blanks on several of
your "givens." I'm guessing that your intensive experience with checkout
makes some of these things foregone conclusions to you:
1) What specific items are vestiges (having to choose a credit card type,
multi-page wizards, not using biometrics or RFID)???
2) What momentum does Paypal have, other than being the first in years to
eat Visa/MC/Amex's lunch? This is honestly not a condemnation. I'm asking
if/how they've improved checkout.

UIE Web App Summit - Monterey

So Day 3 of this event has started and I am a bit surprised that no
one has posted anything yet.

Anyone who was there/still there have any moving thoughts?

For me it was a great trip and worth it (traveling with my boss who is
not a designer) to hear, "wow these Adaptive Path guys are pretty
sharp."

I nearly snarfed my coffee (laughing).
