User Research as a means of obtaining Product Requirements

Folks,

I would like to clarify a particular aspect of user research, or to
obtain pointers to where this has already been done.

I generally work in the 'research' side of research and development.
The organizations I work in and my typical colleagues have great
technical insight and knowledge, but very little notion of who will
eventually use the end products of their innovation, how they will
use them, why, and so on.

I have undertaken user research programs to clarify these issues,
essentially to hammer down product requirements of the form
'The user has need X.

The classic juxtaposition I use in my talks is Apple vs. Microsoft or
Adobe.

Both of the latter use tremendous amounts of user research in varying
degrees and of varying types. They spend a lot of money on it. Both
do classic personas, profiles, scenarios, etc. The former (Apple)
does exactly none--at least on their consumer products. This doesn't
mean they don't do any testing, just that they little or none user
research up front. Also, they only cater to one user: Steve. He tests
EVERYTHING!

Remote IxD work

I have worked on a few small, remote IxD projects (involving primarily
expert reviews, wireframes, task flow diagrams, etc - not user research),
and have discovered it can either be a pretty tricky process to maneuver or
a complete cake-walk.

I'm wondering what experiences others on this list have had. Are there
particular issues you've come across over and over, specific to remote
projects, or has it changed every time according to the client and the
client's process?
