JOB: Interaction Designer at Digitaria Los Angeles (Full-Time)

Hello all,

Digitaria is expanding the LA office and we¹re looking for talented
Interaction Designers to help out with all the opportunities there (I say
'there' as our main office is in San Diego). Experience with the
entertainment industry and web application design is a plus. Boring bullets
below.

Mobile design books

Take a look at http://handheldusability.com
The book's mostly sold out, but Amazon claims to have some for sale.

There are a few good books on mobile design out in addition to my own
"Handheld Usability"-there's also the "Mobile Information Architecture" by
Matt Jones & Gary Marsden.

Expert/Rapid/Special Forces Design (was: YetAnother iPod Birth Story)

The problem I have with the ?Genius Design? label is that the definition lumps two very different types of designers into one group based upon the fact that they may not include user research in their process.

Many designers, either because they do not know any better or do not want to extend the effort, ignore the context of use and goals/actions of the user. Consideration of the interdependencies between the user, the object being designed, any interface needed, the goals and actions taken, and the environment are what, in my opinion, define interaction design.

Designing the Obvious, coming to a bookshelf near you

If you're interested in finding new sources of debate and lively
conversation, you might pick up a copy of my new book, released today,
called Designing the Obvious. It discusses guiding principles of web
application design, but does so by pointing out concrete examples and
talking about how to reproduce the qualities that make web apps great.

The term "interaction design" is mentioned exactly once, on the second to
last page of the book ... I think.

Managing Translated Text Length

All,

We are working on a project for an embedded system GUI that will be
translated into several languages. We have designed the layout around a
set of US English text strings that will be presented in a proportional
(non-fixed width) fonts. We did our best to allow for expansion when the
strings are translated, however there a still several instances where
there will only be a finite amount of space to fit a translated string.

Anyone from Finland?

Hello, everyone!

I asked this before on the IxDESN list with no result, so I will try again
here.

I came here in Helsinki, Finland, 2 months ago and I will be staying here
for a while. Is there anyone from Helsinki on this list?
I was hoping for a quick presentation of the city from an IxD point of view,
or at least just a chat.

Thanks,
Sebi
