what makes usability successful in organizations?

What is it about some organizations who have gotten usability right versus
others who have tried and failed? Is it the corporate culture and justifying
usability's existence? Is it the misunderstanding of user-centric design
with other 'marketing' models? What about the political issues or working
with engineers?

In my experience, the difference in 'culture' between usability
engineers/interaction designers and the technical engineering team has been
the greatest hurdle for successful usability integration.

When to display grid.

Ryana,

Perhaps you would find it rewarding to to go back, and to look up
historical designs from the
period in graphic design history generally labeled as
"International style," and the works from the Swiss schools under the
tutelage of designers such as
Armin Hofmann, Emil Ruder, and others. Start with schools from Basel
and Weimar.

Then study Jan Tschichold.

There were a lot of printed works these practitioners, including
company bills and bills of lading and
the forms that companies run on (_ran_ on, anyway).

FW: Illustrator vs Fireworks

"I've found that frames is one of the more difficult things for people
new to FW to wrap their heads around. Here's how I describe it: use
layers to organize your UI *structurally*; use frames to organize
your UI in *time*."

If you're interested in achieving this concept in Photoshop (CS2), you can
use the animation palette to create collections of visible layers, and then
step through the frames for presentation. (if I'm understanding the concept
correctly)

When to display grid i n list view

Hi,Jackbellis,
Thank you for your kind notice.
Now, I'll try to ask my question again.
In Excel, the grid line is always displayed by default. Then in what cases shall the grid line be displayed in a form? One case may be the user needs to set position to certain cell frequently. Any other ideas of the guidelines to display/hide the grid line?

Kind Regards!

Sources for online help tool: FAQ and "helpdesk" combined

Hi,

I'm currently searching for a usable user interface solution for an
online "help tool", which would combine FAQ and helpdesk at company.com.
The idea is to offer so simple and tempting user interface to FAQ,
that users would prefer that to sending the e-mail.

I guess the problem is quite universal among web sites, but so far, I
have found no good examples of how to implement this.

Illustrator vs Fireworks

I know that Fireworks has come up occasionally in the discussion of prototyping tools, so hopefully this isn't too off-topic, but can someone who's used both FW and Illustrator help me out on something...

Am I suffering from familiarity delusion, or is Illustrator just horribly antiquated? I recently started using Illustrator 9.0 for a traditional publishing project. Admittedly, the splash screen copyright says 1998-2000, so maybe I'm comparing oranges to rotten apples. I hope that's the whole explanation.
