JOB SF,CA Senior Visual Designer

Tired of the same old thing? I have a unique opportunity for an
intellectually inclined visual designer who is interested in working in
"on engagements" that are not just highly creative, but rigorously
structured in such a way that they will be able to do their best work in
40-hour week.

If you are a Visual Designer looking to solve impossible design problems
with a flexible methodology this is the place for you!

what's the obessions with Visio?

I'm quite curious about everyone's general feelings about Visio. I see so
many job descriptions where Visio is a required software skill for IA or
IxD's and I just don't get it! What is the obsession with Microsoft
Visio?Who set
that as a standard? When did it become a standard?

Personally, I can't stand Visio, and I won't to use it to mock up wireframes
or process flows. I find that powerpoint can be very useful because you can
send those to anyone. And I particularly like using Flash to make mocks,
because both the designer and coders are happy with Flash too.

Screen Design for Touchscreen

Hi everybody,

does anybody know reliable and understandable literature about the
screendesign for touchscreens? My colleage needs to design a touchscreen for
a medical device, and he asked me about appropriate font size, button design
and similar. The corporate style guide includes information about pixel
size, but as the pixel size differs between different displays he would much
prefer size in mm.

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Workflow GUIs?

I have a problem. I am working on a weblication where a workflow will be defined using a GUI. The problem is that the workflows will iterate and fork and we need a GUI that supports this. To top it of the weblication will be used by non-programmers who have no prior knowledge of what a fork or iteration is.

What I seek is inspiration.

Critique Requested: Cooper Interaction DesignerTest

Hi Tony & Robert,

Thank you so much for your comments. I have certainly been very primitive in
my imagination and this is a good wake-up call for me.

Having identified infinite design blunders, I am now ashamed of my solution.
What was I thinking when I sent this solution to Cooper expecting to do
well? Nevertheless, this is a good thing that happened to me. I have learnt
a lot from taking this test and getting it critiqued. It's given me a very
good idea of the real quality of my IxD skills.

Smart Filtering for Usability Requests

This is a very interesting problem that I was asked to find a solution for
from my usability team lead.

Problem: We have a web form on our intranet which different teams can fill
out to request usability work. Currently the form is primarily textfields
asking for information about the project. The different project teams fill
these out without restriction. The team lead is receiving some forms that
have not much of a usability nature to them.

Personas development - best practices

Personas development is becoming more and more important as a practice in
the company I work for. People in other disciplines have been involved in
creative workshops, we are doing collaborative creation with clients, and we
are investigating ways to better express and use the results of this
creative exercise.

I am looking for examples of best practices: What are the most efficient and
insightful works we have available. I am looking for examples of creative
results, or meaningful practices.

How Many Users Suffer In Silence?

Does anybody have a reliable stat on the ratio of the number of users who complain about something to the number who just suffer in silence?

I'm looking for some way to say "for these 5 complaints there are probably xx many more people out there annoyed but not bothering to complain."

Thanks in advance.

Tool choices for website design

Hey everyone -

Here's a seemingly basic question, but I'm not sure what the best answer is.

I like to have multi-page design documents. That way all the page designs
are kept together, presented in the right order, easy to circulate. You can
mix in introductory pages, diagrams, design alternatives, and all are kept
in context. Also, I prefer to have the annotations visible next to the
wireframe, on the same page rather than say on a second page or in an email
or anywhere else. I've been using InDesign and OmniGraffle for this.
